The world of STEM has changed a lot in the past few years. Where once it was unheard of to see a female scientist or engineer, more girls than ever are heading to university to study STEM subjects. But one profession that remains underrepresented with women is programming. However, She Codes is helping change that.
“She Codes is a coding program for women,” founder Kate Kirwin told Hope Drive.
“Everything we do is fully funded by government and industry, which allows us to give free opportunities for women to learn something, and then connect them to jobs in tech at the end of it.”

She Codes runs one-day, one-week and six-month programs – catering for all abilities and ages. Next month, they are bringing their one-day workshop to Sydney for the first time, and Kate encourages everyone who is interested in coding to come along.
“We’ve had from ages five through to 80,” Kate said.
“I get told all the time ‘I’m too old to have a career change’. You definitely aren’t.”

In fact, programming jobs are in high demand – and that demand will only increase as time goes on.
“Recent studies are showing that we need another million people in tech in Australia by 2025.
“It’s a great time to enter the industry, because the job opportunities are endless,” Kate said.
As well as that, Kate believes programming is one of the most rewarding careers.
“You just write a couple of lines of words and suddenly you’ve got a beautiful website that does things,” Kate said.
“Seeing that come from nothing is super exciting to me.
“That’s what I’ve loved about building this business as well.”
